About Michael Manring
American bass guitarist Michael "Manthing" Manring, later member of Montreux, was born on June 27, 1960 in the San Francisco Bay Area - Annapolis to be exact.
Early Life:
He was youngest of four children. His family originally lived in Norfolk, Virginia, then moved to the suburbs of Washington D.C. in 1969. The Manrings were very active musically, which is why Michael became very musically gifted. He and his brother Doug were a guitarist and drummer, and they later formed a rhythm group during their high school years. Their style of music making was a mix of jazz rock and fusion, playing rock classics at beer parties or pop hits in formal places, such as restaurants and weddings. Manring was also a student of bassist Peter Princiotto from Spring Hill, Virginia. He began studying a Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachussetts in the late 1970s, had to cancel them in 1979 due to being overwhelmed with too much school work, not to mention touring with several different bands. During his time in college, however, he used every opportunity to play with different musicians and bands. In the 1980s he studied and toured with Jaco Pastorius and began to develop his own style.
Manring During the Windham Hill Days:
During the 1980s, Manring was not only a solo guitarist for the Windham Hill label, but he has also recorded with artists and bands, such as Spastic Ink, Alex Skolnick, Larry Kassin, Tom Darter, Steve Morse, David Cullen, Alex de Grassi, Will Ackerman and many others, He was also a member of Darol Anger's and Barbara Higbie's band, Montreux, as well as the bands Yo Miles!, Henry Kaiser, Prog Rock, and Wadada Leo Smith's Miles Davis tribute band. In 1994, Manring was polled as "Bassist of the year" by readers of Bass Player magazine and he toured with Michael Hedges, performed live with guest musicians and played on all of Hedge's albums, except for one.
Manring's Life Now:
Since 2005, Manring is a member of the band DeMania with Alex de Grassi and Christopher Garcia. He still tours the world and currently lives in Oakland, California.
